Other Fun

This page is dedicated to some fun non-video game related activities I do on a regular basis.

Dungeons and Dragons
I picked up playing Dungeons and Dragons (or D&D as the kids call it) in the summer of 2009. I have played a couple of different characters from time to time, but am proudly still playing my first character - a Half-Orc Ranger named Urk Aak. Sadly, that campaign will come to an end soon, but it was great fun the past year and a half. Below is an image of my latest character sheet.

Board Games
I've always had a fondness of board games, but the desire to play them faded away as the games of my childhood were easily beatable against my immediate family. But when I entered college, I formed a new appreciation for the activity when I was introduced to excellent new games I've never heard of. What I appreciate the most about these games are that they go against the typical foundations of board games and reduce the reliance of chance to win. Below are some of my recent favorite board games.

Arkham Horror: This is the ultimate team game. I can count on one hand how many times we've won, and those times were ecstatic. Even though this is one of the most complicated board games out there, I still have loads of fun as there is inevitably times in this game where somebody is screwed and everyone has to make the difficult decision whether or not to help or forget about that person.

Battlestar Galactica: I started playing this because I enjoyed the show so much, but my expectations were low. Surprisingly, I love the aspect of knowing that there is a traitor and trying to analyze every little detail and tell of the players to see if he or she is the Cylon.

Ca$h 'n Gun$: Truthfully, if this game didn't come with orange foam guns, I probably wouldn't like it as much. This game is quick, intense, and have upset many people for seemingly random bullying. This is another game where the best man bluffing usually is the winner, unless he won the last round.

Dominion: I just enjoy the idea of crafting your strategy on the fly. The game is fairly balanced and if you're attentive, you know exactly what everyone else can do. This game is solely about countering you deck according to your opponents. Dominion is the closest board game equivalent to a Real Time Strategy game that I've even seen.

Fury of Dracula: Whether playing as Dracula or one of the hunters, FoD makes me sweat with anticipation. I don't enjoy this game as much as a hunter because it always becomes a game of vampire hide and seek. But as Dracula, setting traps and traveling requires intense planning and foresight as you want the hunters to activate your traps accordingly, and you only want to fight the hunters half of the game time.

Computer Repair
During college, I always worked somewhere between 12 and 30 hours a week - whilst going to classes full time. I worked only a couple of jobs, but those lasted my entire education. My final job while attending school was at a computer repair/offical Apple scholastic reseller called ComputerWorks. I enjoyed this job greatly as it allowed me to discuss computers all day as a sales clerk. Even though I knew a little about computer repair, I gain so much knowledge working there. I started out helping slightly on easy software and hardware problems (informing people how to turn on their computer), then I gradually started performing more important tasks as I became a leader. Below are some of the repairs I have done on both Apple and Windows OS based computers during my 3 1/2 year stint:
  • RAM installation
  • Hard Drive installation
  • Motherboard installation
  • Format/Reinstall of operating systems
  • Data transfer
  • Diagnosis of bad RAM, batteries, and motherboards
