Like you said, a painting is relatively cheaper to make than a sculpture because of the tools and needed materials to produce it. The same goes for video games/digital entertainment; the games you listed which you were happy with are all made using Adobe Flash or are sprite based engines with the exception of shadow complex (I think, but correct me if I'm wrong). Those other retail titles such as Brutal Legend or any major retail product with the $50-60 price tag are using much different tools and require a more labor intensive process. The cost of those tools, 3d software, 2d software, and any 3rd party software to reach the level of detail at which point we can perceive it as "real" to our eye is much more costly than a flat plane image moving on 2 dimensions. The distribution of a game is much different than a piece of art though, because of the fact that no one really owns an "original" piece like an original painting except for the studio who created it.
